Our students have a good track record in competitions and seem to enjoy the challenge. Recently however, except for the annual 'Construction Challenge' we haven't submitted work to any.
Former pupil Kirsty Dick's wonderful design for a magazine article received the top prize in the Advanced Higher Graphics category in a national competition in 2006.
The competition is run by the Technology Teachers' Association (TTA).
Mr Black collected the prize and certificate on Kirsty's behalf, while at the TTA's annual conference with a team of Royal High Graphics and Product Design pupils.

Lynsey's rendering of her superb computer generated mouse was runner-up in the Higher Graphics category in the TTA's 2006 competition.
You can see that she modelled the components inside the casing too.

Jamie's Environment>
In November 2005 Jamie was awarded first place in a national competition to find the best 3D computer generated 'environment' in Advanced Higher Graphics. The work was created in a freeware software programme called 'Anim8or', a 'surface' modeller.
The CDT Department received a copy of Autocad Inventor software, valued at £100-.
We also submitted Jamie's environment to the 'Anim8or' web site and Steven Glanville (the software engineer who wrote the software) has featured it in Gallery No. 14.
Jamie's 'bump mapped' tiles turned out particularly well. The tiles are in fact a flat 'painting' that gives the illusion of depth.
All of the reflections in the tiles have been 'faked' - Anim8or can't do 'raytraced' reflections.
On Saturday 05 November, Matthew collected his award, a cheque for £50- for his fourth place in a national competition run by the Technology Teachers' Association. Matthew was quizzed about his drum (built in Standard Grade Craft and Design) by a panel of judges at the TTA Conference in Dundee.
The CDT department also received a cheque for £50- from the TTA.
We've posted a page of info about the drum - see link below.

In 2004, for the first time, we entered some of our pupils' work in the annual competition of the Technology Teachers' Association of Scotland
We submitted ten pieces of work and three of them gained awards. To the left is a photo of the trophy Asuna Ikeshima received. Details below.
This is one of the pages from Asuna's stunning publication - an article on a film called 'The Black Bull of Norway'.
Asuna is featuring all of the article, and the accompanying poster design, on the Graphics page of her site - see link below.
Asuna received an HMV gift voucher, value £15- and a 'Jordan F1' tee shirt. The department won a printer/scanner/copier and a copy of 'Autodesk Inventor' software.

He received an HMV gift voucher, value £15- and a 'Jordan F1' tee shirt. The department won a labelling machine and a copy of 'Autodesk Autocad 2005' software.
Iain has gone on to study architecture at Edinburgh University.
Chung Hang's leaflet was awarded 'Runner-Up' in the Magazine / Leaflet category at Higher Level.
He received an HMV gift voucher, value £15- and a 'Jordan F1' tee shirt. The department received a copy of 'Autodesk Autocad 2005' software.
The leaflet is for a fictional coffee company. It's a superb piece of work. Chung Hang also produced a suite of business stationery for this fictional company.
This competition was run some time ago and was open to schools in the Edinburgh area. Kindness Scotland is a recently established charity dedicated to celebrating 'random acts of kindness'. It wanted entrants to design a 'corporate logo' for its use.
This type of logo is used on the organisation's letter heads, advertisements, web site, business cards, packaging etc. A good corporate logo helps identify an organisation and makes its presence known immediately eg the red cross of the Red Cross charity.
Gavin's winning design is illustrated opposite. Click on the image to link to Kindness Scotland's web site and see Gavin's logo in use.
Gavin received a family ticket to 'Our Dynamic Earth' as a prize from Kindness Scotland.
