Curriculum enhancement

Each year S1 pupils compete for the S1 Euroquiz trophy. Teams of 4 pupils join together to test their knowledge of all things European, ranging from Geography, History and famous people to languages, music and food and drink. This year, the European day of languages is 26^th September: to celebrate, this year our Euroquiz will take place on Thursday 24^th September.

In 2005 and 2007, students studying AH German visited Berlin during their October holidays. During the February holidays of 2009, students studying Higher and AH French visited Paris.

During the last two sessions, pupils took part in a great many events out of school:

• S1 German students won ‘best costumes’ in a drama competition at George Watson’s, with their play rehearsed at lunchtimes with the German Assistent.
• S1 French students won prizes in the Alliance Française competition, designing ‘robots of the future’.
• S2 German students performed in a poetry competition at St. Andrews University.
• S2 German students won prizes for their contribution to a calendar organised by the British German Association
• S2 French students enjoyed a French film club at lunchtimes
• S3 German students visited the German Christmas Market as a reward for their work in Access 3
• S4 French students visited the National Gallery to view the Impressionists’ exhibition and produced fascinating written pieces inspired by their visit
• Higher and AH French students took part in a French Immersion afternoon organised and hosted in The Royal High School
• Mrs Beaton is working to attain International Status for the school.
• S2 - S3 French students celebrated Chinese New Year by looking at language, food and New Year celebrations
• Edinburgh University language (S3) came in to do linguistics
• S2 French breakfasts
• S3 French to Edinburgh International Film Festival

Clubs for this session:

• S5 Higher revision classes have started to support pupils who would like to improve their grades. Come along to room 50 on Mondays after school.
• Spanish club - with support from the PSA and our bilingual students. This offers S2 and S3 pupils the chance to learn the core language required to begin their studies in Spanish - Wednesdays.
